Subscription Music Services

I remember back in high school when the internet was a new craze. One day I stumbled upon Napster and figured out that music didn’t have to be bought at the store anymore. What a revelation! The fact that you could find any type of music, even those CDs that hadn’t come to your local music shop yet, along with the fact that it was free turned online music sharing sites into an incredibly well loved phenomenon. It seemed like the perfect subscription music service. You could easily find just about any song you desired at no cost. With that kind of service at your fingertips, how could you not download your favorite music rather than buying it?

Napster finally got in a lot of distress for sharing music illegally but since then there have been countless other websites sharing music in the same way like Pandora or Limewire. These other music downloading sites, but, never were able to match Napster’s popularity. The reason for this is that the recording industry place a lot of pressure on enforcing piracy laws and stopping illegal downloading. Sites like Napster were shut down as a result. What came next was the creation of subscription music services which allowed users to continue downloading their favorite tunes but required the user to pay a small fee. The best feature of this type of subscription music service is that, even though you have to pay a small fee, you can choose exactly which songs you want to download unlike when you buy a CD from the store and have to pay for every song on the album whether you like it or not. The choice is yours to download whatever you want from out of stock CDs, new hit singles, to whole albums.

Some people, like me, but, don’t feel that subscription music services are the best choice. I supposed it depends upon your own situation and music needs. Still there are so many music sharing sites that allow you to download for no cost that I just can’t justify paying to download a song. I usually go to sites like Limewire to find my music. All you have to do is search the name of the artist or band, or search the song name, and instantly you will find free downloads for what you are searching for. Granted, these free music download sites might not have every single song out there, but they do have most songs and artists. Pandora works the same way but instead of downloading the songs, you can listen to them online anytime you want. It is a fantastic free type of subscription music service.

You should also consider checking out radio stations online. These are not subscription music services but you can find a number of stations playing your favorite genres of music. Plus, online radio includes the host’s banter and talk shows which you won’t get from a subscription music service. If you simply want to listen to some tunes without a specific preference of song choice, then live radio streaming is a fantastic choice. But, if your tastes in music are very particular and you only want to hear certain songs, you really should consider signing up for a subscription music service.
