When you reckon back on the 80’s what images come to mind? Neon clothes? Frizzy hair? Pop music? Perhaps thinking of 80’s pop music conjures up images of Madonna, Billy Idol, the Cure, and Michael Jackson. These artists are just a few of the pop idols from the 80’s. 80’s pop music marked an vital transition to the music we hear today and those pop stars we remember from the 80’s deserve the credit for brining about this change. From 80’s pop music evolved a number of music genres such as punk, rap, and modern day pop which were not previously in the lime light. The 80’s marked the end of the 60’s and 70’s music scene and ushered in a style of music completely new. The the help of music television like MTV, artists and bands now had the chance to promote their tunes in a new way and music videos helped leave a longer lasting impression on fans. This change in the music industry brought with it a slew of new musicians and the music industry got a huge push forward.

Michael Jackson’s song ‘Thriller’ from 1982 remains a landmark of the 1980’s and of 80’s pop music in general. The song’s accompanying music video left a lasting impression with revolutionary graphics and never before seen publicity from MTV which subsequently greatly boosted the song’s popularity. It is also vital to consider how pop music influenced the lives of those growing up in the 1980’s. If you question any person from this generation about ‘New Kids On The Block’ they will recount their memories of concerts and the fan club lunch box they used to tote to school. Kids these days will have no thought who New Kids on the Block was nor could they name most other artists and hits from the 80’s. Those who were raised during the 80’s but, will always look back on these memories fondly.

From the 80’s emerged a number of pop idols including Madonna whose unique sound and daring stage performances remain unforgettable. There is also AeroSmith, U2, Prince, George Michael, Phil Collins and many more. We recently lost the largest pop icon of all time, Michael Jackson. His career and contribution to the development of pop music will always be remembered and he will forever remain the King of Pop. A number of the artists from the 80’s pop music scene continue to come out with hits and their tunes can regularly be heard on the radio. It is a testament of time and shows that the music from the 80’s will remain well loved far into the future.
