Many contemporary gospel recording artists have found their music being played on secular radio stations. With their up tempo beats and soul stirring lyrics these songs got believers tapping their feet, and enjoying praise and worship moments in their cars.

But before I can continue with the artist of today I must give honor and respect to the leading gospel artist who came before them. And let me also acknowledge the Winans Family, and 11 time Grammy award winner Shirley Ceaser who is a right inspiration.

Yolanda Adams: This glowing Houston, Texas native in the year 2000 won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Soul Gospel Album, soon came a American Music Award for Inspirational Artist of the Year, and she is also the winner of many Stellar Awards. Her hits include “This Too Shall Pass” and “Thank You”.

Martha Munizzi: This incredible sister in Christ has appeared on numerous occasions on TBN’s Praise the Lord program. Her hits include “Glorious”, and “Because of Who You Are”.

Kirk Franklin: He first graced us with his talent back in 1993 with his debut album Kirk Franklin and The Family. Since then he has been a powerhouse in the genre of contemporary gospel music. With his string of hits, some of his most well loved are “Stomp”, and “Silver and Gold”. His success continues with his latest cd Hero which includes the songs “Looking for You”, “Imagine Me” and “Could’ve Been”.

Mary Mary: This dynamic Grammy winning duo hit the scene in 2000 with the rhythm filled hit “Shackles”. Their fresh hit which is also played on many secular radio stations, “Yesterday” gives you that ancient-school church feel when you hear it.

Fred Hammond: For 22 years this vocalist, bassist and song writer has been uplifting people with his music. His hits include “Celebrate (He Lives)”, “Loved on Me” and from his latest cd “Lord Your Grace” and “No Greater Like” and the long time church favorite “This is The Day”.

Well for one day and night, you allow yourself to just delight in the moment before you step out into the world ahead. A young black man enters an ARC studio. He crushes out his cigarette and pulls a guitar from a dented, road-stained case. He takes a seat in front of the mic and prepares for what will be a five day recording session. As he tunes his instrument and waits for his cue, he reflects on the long road that brought him here.
He recalls his childhood in Hazelhurst, Mississippi: his poor stepfather whose name he rejected for his biological father’s – a man he had never met. His early noodling on the Jew’s Harp and harmonica. His initial dabbling on the guitar, an instrument he found hard to master.

Defining the Blues

“Blues is the Healer.”
“Blues is the Mother of Music.”
“Blues ain’t nothin’ but a excellent man feelin’ terrible.”

We all know the blues. We know it’s quality and taste. We can identify its influence in nearly all pop, rock, soul, funk and jazz and their countless offshoots., but what defines the blues? Before we can attempt to price its origins, we must identify the nuts-and-bolts components of this art form and follow them to their sources.
Blues, like haiku, is a very formally structured, minimalist art form where endless expression is allowed only within very strict parameters. For simplicity’s sake, I will define these parameters as follows:

Call-and-Response: Either a musical exchange between instrument and instrument or instrument and vocal (excellent examples of both in John Lee Hooker’s “Boom Sigh State”), there is some usage of this technique in most blues. Often this is a “conversation” between lead vocal and lead instrument ala B.B. King. Occasionally there is a call-and-response between vocals (Ray Charles’ “What I Say? “)

I-IV-V chord structure: Arguably the most defining quality of the blues. Whether in a minor or major key, blues nearly always follows either a 12 bar (“Hootchie Kootchie Man”) or 8 bar (“Walkin’ by Myself”) structure along the I-IV-V intervals.

Pentatonic Scales: Though there are infinite variations of passing tones, tri-tones and extensions, the “meat” of the blues is the five-note scale, whether major (I-ii-iii-V-vi) or minor (i-III-iv-v-vii).Now that we have identified the basics of what is arguably the most vital musical genre of the past two centuries, let’s follow them befriend to their genesis.

Digging For the Roots

Seeking the origins of the Blues is an Indiana Jones-like adventure taking one deep into the buried collective swamps of oppression, genocide and cultural osmosis. Into the wilderness of pain and all we have tried to leave behind. It is also a tale of the triumph of art over adversity and the indomitability of the Human Spirit. We start half a millennium ago in pre-slavery West Africa…

A Tale of 3 Continents: Field Hollers, Spirituals and Slavery

Traditional West African culture has from ancient times had music and rhythm at its heart. Drums are used for communication, celebration, worship and recreation. Work songs and sacred hymns are built on ancient call-and-response structures, often with highly sophisticated harmonic accompaniment. This is folk music, known to nearly all and certainly to a fantastic majority of the doomed souls along the African Coast who were to be the victims of the slave trade holocaust. For centuries, they would be captured, transported to another continent and enslaved. There would be a systematic effort to eradicate all traces of their former identity; their religion, their language, their culture, even their names.

But the music would remain in their hearts. The work song, though sung in new tongues, would maintain them through the hours of backbreaking labor and original folk songs with a familiar feel would entertain them in their precious “free” time

…. and they would bring the music to their new church where it would be forever impacted by another ancient musical form – the European Spiritual. Simple folk hymns like “Incredible Grace,” often built on a pentatonic scale and with a I-IV-V structure, would have a tremendous influence on the field hollers and spirituals of the American slaves and would eventually evolve into what would become Gospel music. This musical tradition would continue to develop long after the slaves’ Emancipation.

Spirituals and work songs, rooted in both the slavery era and the West African societies from which most African-American slaves were originally taken, provided cultural sustenance to African Americans in the midst of intense racial oppression. They first came to be valued by northern white audiences in the late-19th century. Later, folklorists started collecting (and eventually recording) traditional southern music. John and Alan Lomax recorded southern musicians (African-American, white, and Mexican-American) for the Library of Congress. They recorded “Long John”, a work song, sung by a man identified as “Lightning” and a group of his fellow black convicts at Darrington State Prison Farm in Texas in 1934. Sunless prisoners working in gangs to shatter rocks and distinct swamps relied on the repeated rhythms and chants of work songs (originating in the forced gang labor of slavery) to set the pace for their collective labor. “Long John” mixed religious and secular concerns, including the notion of successful escape from bondage, a deeply felt desire of both slaves and prisoners. historymatters.gmu.edu

Jim Crow, Jook Joints and the Devil’s Music

Once their long-awaited freedom had finally arrived, the former slaves quickly found that they had once again been screwed. There was no equality. There were no forty acres. There was no mule. There was instead an impoverished life as a sharecropper and second-class citizen. Ostracized and segregated from White society, African Americans formed a vibrant, dynamic counter-culture to offset their new hardships. Religion was still alive and well, but blacks started to seek solace in more earthly, secular pursuits. House parties and hootenannies became common. Musicians entertained party-goers with a original, Gospel-based but decidedly nonspiritual do of music. They accompanied each other with whatever instruments were affordable to a sharecropper: harmonicas, Jew’s Harps, washboards, sometimes cheap guitars and banjos. If guitars were unavailable, wires could be nailed to a wall, tuned and played with a bottle or piece of metal. This technique would eventually be applied to the guitar as Slide or Bottleneck.

Unable to enter a white drinking establishment, blacks in the South started to open “jooks,” cheap bars that featured dancing and entertainment. These were rough, perilous places shunned by the more upstanding members of the community. The lyrics of the entertainers dealt with despair, poverty, violence and frustration. There was explicit carnality and outright sexual bragging. The new music had cut its umbilical chord to Gospel. The Blues were born.

By the 1930s, the Blues was incredibly common throughout the South. There were Blues records and radio stations. Blues produced celebrities and legends like Son House and Willie Brown. It provided the soundtrack to rural black life.
It was tranquil virtually unknown to most of America.

This would soon change.

4. I Watched it All on My Radio, Lionel Cartwright

“I’d go through the stations ’til I found a game/I knew how they played by the sounds of their names.”

This country is as Americana as the sport Lionel Cartwright croons about. Many can relate listening to baseball games of yesteryear on the ancient transistor radio. Although the song mentions baseball in only one verse, it evokes vignettes that are as American as baseball.

“Well, now it’s the 80’s,/And Brett is the greatest,/And Bobby Bonds can play for everyone.”

This song, also known as “Willie, Mickey and The Duke,” takes baseball fans on a historic journey of some of the game’s greatest players. Every fan should add this to his collection.

6. We Will Rock You, Queen

“You got mud on yo face/You huge disgrace/Kickin your can all over the place.”

Queen is the king of get-in-your-face, rock-em-out tunes for all sports. This classic has been played at every pro sports event that I’ve attended.

Kele Okereke is born on October 13, 1981 in Liverpool, England. He is the lead singer and rhythm guitarist for the British indie rock band Bloc Party. Bloc Party is a British indie rock band comprise of lead singer Kele Okereke, lead guitarist Rvussell Lissack, bassist Gordon Moakes, and drummer Matt Tong. Bloc Party’s music style is a mixture of spiky guitar rock which is influenced by The Cure, Les Savy Fav, Blur, and The Smashing Pumpkins.

Kele’s parents are Catholic Nigerian (Igbo) and he has one sister. His father is a molecular biologist and his mother a midwife. He became friends with Lissack in 1998 while going to the same Trinity High school.

It is at the 1999 Reading Festival that Okereke and Lissack decides to launch a band formed under the title of ‘The Dale Winton Tribute Band’. Moakes joins after seeing the advertisement in NME magazine and Tong is chosen from an audition.

Fun Facts

After forming the band, Okereke continued to search for English literature at university. Until the release of Silent Alarm, he had kept his musical activities secret from his parents.

The single, “I Tranquil Remember”, is their first American single.

Okereke went to Berlin to seize the city’s music oriented spirit in 2007.

A huge influence in Kele’s life was his cousin friend David Rowland who is the lead singer of The Bobcats.

Career Highlights

In February 2005, the band’s debut album Silent Alarm is critically acclaimed and toped NME’s Album of the Year list. The album also got certified as platinum in the UK about a year later.

Their second album, A Weekend in the City, released in 2007 reached number two in the UK and number twelve in the Billboard 200 with 48,000 copies sold.

Biography

Russell Dean Lissack is born on March 11, 1981. Lissack grew up in Chingford, London and went to Bancroft’s School in Woodford, Essex. He studied Sociology at the London South Bank University but had to fall out before graduation to go on tour with his band, Bloc Party. He is the lead guitarist of the indie rock band of Bloc Party in London. Noted for his triangular fringe style which covers part of his face; the haircut is now known as “blochead”.

Fun Facts

Lissack is engaged to his girlfriend, Melanie Hunter during the Christmas period 2007.

As a committed vegetarian, he recently appeared in the Vegetarian Magazine talking about his ‘traditional Christmas dinner which replaces meat with Quorn fillet.

Bloc Party’s singer Kele Okereke refers to him as “Silent but Deadly” during their 2007 Reading Festival performance and Russell cheeringly responds.

Career Highlight

He is also in a duo band called Pin Me Down. This band is comprised of himself and Milena Mepris. She likes to refer to Lissack as a “Meerkat” because of his appearing to hobble about onstage and also while off stage.

He will be DJing on New Years Eve 2008 at London’s Sway Bar, in Holborn.

Biography

Gordon Peter Moakes born on June 22, 1976 is a bassist and backing singer for English Indie rock band Bloc Party. He is educated at Ousedale School in Newport Pagnell, Milton Keynes, and formerly of Tilehurst, Reading.

Fun Facts

The band tries out a number of names such as Union, Superheroes of BMX, The Angel Range and Diet before settling on the name Bloc Party in September 2003, which is a play on Block Party. Gordon Moakes, said on that the name is a merging of the eastern “Blocs” and the western “parties”, not driven by politics, but rather it “looked, sounded, seemed fine so we went with it” according to livedaily.com

Moakes shares co-writing credits with Okereke on some of the band’s earlier lyrics. In the Union/The Angel Range days he contributed lyrics mostly to the band’s more political songs, and fully wrote an early song entitled “Diet”.

His fans lovingly nickname him “Gordy”

Moakes, and his wife, Carmelita Morales, have the same tattoo of a heart.

Career Highlights

Gordon makes and edits a fanzine “Conform or Die” earlier in 90s.

Matthew Tong born on April 29 1979 in Bournemouth and later moves to Norwich to study Philosophy at the University of East Anglia. . He is the drummer for English indie rock band Bloc Party. He is both English and Chinese. As an early music lover, at the age of 11, he is capable of wonderfully playing the guitar, piano, and drums.

Fun Facts

Okereke, Lissack, and Moakes have strict criteria for the qualifying drummer of their band which makes them turn down eight people who has auditioned. When it came to Tong’s turn what they heard according to the three was “Magic, It’s a sound we thought could possibly never exist”. This is the moment when Bloc Party is officially formed.

In the 2005 “Banquet” video, Tong uses a five piece maple Pearl Session drum kit.

Tong is thought to be the friendliest among the group because he talks more on interviews which makes him seem less shy than the other members.

Career Highlight

During his studies at Thames Valley University in 2001, Kele Okereke questions Tong to audition for his band.

On November 9, 2006, Tong suffers a collapsed lung while on tour accompanying Panic! at the Disco which ends the Bloc Party tour.

Miranda Lambert won the “Best Video of the Year” award for her hit single, “White Liar.” She was very surprised at the announcement, as she had been questioned to appear at a radio event and just assumed it was another photo shoot. Lambert, instead found herself being the recipient of the “Video of the Year Award” for “White Liar.”

The award for “Event of the Year” was also announced, with Blake Shelton and Trace Adkins taking the award for their efforts with “Hillbilly Bone.” This award marked the first ACM award for Blake Shelton and the third for Trace Adkins.

Lambert was up against stiff competition for the “Best Video of the Year Award.” Taylor Swift was nominated for “You Belong With Me,” Lady Antebellum for “Need You Now,” Brad Paisley’s “Welcome to the Future,” and Randy Houser for “Boots On.”

Lambert remarked that she had a blast making the video, which included her band and crew all participating. But, it was Jamey Johnson, her best friend from the third grade that made the video special in her eyes. Johnson even brought along some moonshine for the event!

Blake Shelton, Lambert’s real life boyfriend, was also honored with an early award. His hit song “Hillbilly Bone” was really inspired by Lambert, who insisted that Blake approach Adkins on the project. It looks like this dynamic duo has their act together and each other’s back.
